Good luck!
My name is Malya McHugh and I have epilepsy. I have been dealing with the effects of my epilepsy since I was five months old. Now that I am 10 years old and have learned how to live with my Epilepsy I realize how important it is to raise awareness about epilepsy and help people to understand some of the challenges that having epilepsy may cause for young people. FACES is a non-profit that was founded by my doctor, Dr. Orrin Devinsky, and is affiliated with NYU’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. It funds cutting edge research to improve epilepsy care, advances new therapies, and fosters a supportive community for children, families and caregivers who live with the challenges of epilepsy Personally, I hope to help others to understand that even though I do not look different, there are everyday tasks, things that most people take for granted, that are difficult for me because of epilepsy. For example, when I started middle school this year, I had to have a special touch locker installed for me that would make opening it easier. I want people to learn more about epilepsy so that they do not jump to the conclusion that I am less intelligent but instead that they understand that I have different abilities. I am already supporting this sort of work since I have been involved in a clinical study called the Epilepsy Phenome Genome Project (EPGP), which explores both the medical and emotional dimensions of epilepsy. This project is very important to me because it is finding ways to help and support other kids with epilepsy. So little is known about this disease. Your donation will help people like me both in terms of raising awareness but also in terms of finding a cure or better treatments. My family is also hosting a 4 course dinner with wine pairings at Rusty Mackerel (209 Pinehurst Avenue New York, NY) on Monday December 9 2013 at 8pm to raise additional funds for my cause. Cost of ticket is $150 per person. Small silent auction and door price at the event. Please contact me at francisandpaola@hotmail.com for more information or to purchase a ticket. Sincerely, Malya McHugh
